How to Choose Bass Rods and Reels
You don't need ten rods. One or two good setups will catch bass with almost every lure on this site.
Spinning or baitcasting?
Spinning combo
Best for: beginners, light lures, finesse baits (wacky worm, Ned rig, drop shot) and skipping under docks.
Hard to tangle, easy to learn.
Baitcasting combo
Best for: heavier lures, jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, frogs and pulling fish out of cover.
More power and accuracy, but it takes practice to avoid "backlash" tangles.
Rod basics: length, power and action
| Term | What it means | Good bass choice |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Longer rods cast farther; shorter rods are more accurate up close. | 6'10" to 7'3" covers most fishing |
| Power | How much force it takes to bend the rod (light → heavy). | Medium for spinning; medium-heavy for baitcasting |
| Action | Where the rod bends. Fast = bends near the tip; moderate = bends lower. | Fast for worms and jigs; moderate for crankbaits |
| Gear ratio (reel) | How much line comes in with each turn of the handle. | About 7:1 is a good all-around speed |
Two setups that do it all
Setup #1
All-purpose spinning
- 6'10"–7' medium power, fast action rod
- 2500-size spinning reel
- 10 lb braid with an 8 lb fluorocarbon leader, or 8–10 lb mono
- Throws: wacky worms, Ned rig, drop shot, small swimbaits
Setup #2
All-purpose baitcasting
- 7'–7'3" medium-heavy power, fast action rod
- Baitcasting reel with about a 7:1 gear ratio
- 15 lb fluorocarbon, or 30–50 lb braid for frogs and grass
- Throws: Texas rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, squarebills
Fishing line made simple
Monofilament
Cheap, stretchy and forgiving. Floats, so it's great for topwater and crankbaits. A good choice for beginners.
Fluorocarbon
Nearly invisible underwater and sinks. Sensitive, so you feel more bites. Great for worms, jigs and clear water.
Braid
Super strong and thin with no stretch. Best for frogs, heavy grass, and as a main line with a fluoro leader.
Beginner tip: learn on a spinning combo first. Once you're comfortable, add a baitcaster for heavier lures.
